My mother decided years ago that she didn't want to worry about my sister and me fighting over her jewelry after she was dead, so she's had us call dibs on all her pieces which have 'real' or sentimental value. We first did this back when I was in college, IIRC, and now she's sorting out with us who gets which pieces of my grandmother's jewelry, which came to Mom last year after her mother's death. Some items (from both sets) that she's not so crazy about she's giving us right away, and some she's keeping to use herself.

Last night she came over with some of my grandmother's jewelrey and we went over it - what I liked, what my sister had already said she liked, etc. There were several sets of earrings that my mother's going to have the backs changed to posts on (old clasp-earrings both hurt my earlobes and make me constantly afraid they will fall off), a ring that needs the setting tightened, etc.

And as we were putting everything away in their cloth cases, my mother pointed to a tiny little - something - near the top of one of the cases, which I had taken for a small ornamental button of some kind. She commented that she'd loved that pin as a teenager and had worn it constantly.

A pin? I took a closer look at it. It's not like any pin I'd seen before: it doesn't actually pin, rather, it screws into whatever you're wearing it on. The back extends into a curl, and the tip is pointed. You wear it on thick shirts or tight-weave sweaters, so it holds and doesn't damage the material. It's the exact size of a ladybug and designed to look like - yep - a ladybug, with some kind of red stone for the body, gold wings, and a little black head.

It's adorable!

Mom said she hasn't worn it in years and I could _have_ it. *big happy grin* I'm wearing it now. It's like having a ladybug with gold wings on my shirt collar.

"Sometimes it's the little things."
